Girls smiling at you - what's behind that?

[font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]I every now and then notice or catch girls smiling at me, but not that kind of lust propelled constant smiling just a casual smile. I find it weird because on the looks department I am far below average and there plenty of men on the streets, buses and trains who are more attractive than myself. What kind of message is this? Are they smiling out of pity, kindness or just simply because they see a fellow human being? Any insight into this would be really helpful.[/font]​
